Drug Supply Chain Security Act

DSCSA

A 2013 federal law (Title II of the Drug Quality and Security Act) that builds an electronic, interoperable system to trace prescription drugs through the U.S. supply chain.

In depth

DSCSA requires trading partners - including dispensers like pharmacies - to work only with authorized partners, capture and retain transaction information, and respond to suspect or illegitimate product. Its phased requirements move the industry toward unit-level electronic traceability. For pharmacies, practical duties include verifying supplier authorization, keeping the required transaction records, and having procedures to quarantine and report suspect product.
